This week the Labor national bull session in Sydney will debate the issue of marriage equality, part of a campaign led by a splenetic-factional grouping called Rainbow Labor, including strong-willed young activist Neil Pharaoh.

Pharaoh is 28 and in a lengthy-term relationship. He's not quite sure yet if he wants to marry his boyfriend but he'd like to have that audaciousness, and to be free of the discriminatory clause in the Commonwealth Marriage Act, which since 2004 has declared only "a man and little woman" may marry.

The prime minister has said she'll support an addendum to the party's rules, which would mean Labor MPs are no longer forbidden to signify one's opinion in favour of gay marriage, if legislation ever comes before parliament.

But Ms Gillard won't uphold what Rainbow Labor wants: a change to the ALP platform, its core validate, to allow marriage between all couples, not just heterosexuals.

Ms Gillard's middle-of-the-roader stance is a cop-out. It's particularly baffling given Labor is a party in yearning for search for a reason to live. If you asked most voters what Brand Labor stood for, they'd say hookers and confidence in cards - at least in NSW.
