Earlier this week, the White House, Robert Gibbs, Press Secretary said that Justice John Paul Stevens should retire, a candidate would be available shortly after.

"We'll be ready," said Gibbs.

Gibbs and the Obama administration must now back up their talk. Stevens sent a letter announcing his retirement for President Barack Obama Friday.

The immediate speculation about who will replace Stevens focuses on two female candidates: Judge Diane Wood of Appeals and Solicitor General Elena Kagan.

Federal Judge Merrick Garland, a former senior Department of Justice who is well respected and regarded as less likely to cause significant Republican opposition, has also been tossed about as a possible candidate.
